The purpose for this event is to have an open discussion about suicide.  Why?

  • There were 1,448 REPORTED deaths by suicide in North Carolina in 2021.  This reflects a 10% increase in the number of reported deaths by suicide from 2004 to 2020.
  • Twenty-two (22) Counties in North Carolina (out of 100) do not have a licensed psychiatrist.
  • According to the UNC Sheps Center Health Professional Data Center – 68 counties in North Carolina lack a child psychiatrist.

Two (2) videos about the effects of suicide from the family and community perspective will be shown, facilitated by discussion between each video.

In addition to the videos and discussions, there are planned to be representatives from local mental health providers – including providers who work with school-age children and adolescents.  There will be mental health information and resources freely available to aid parents and families better access care for themselves, their child or someone they love.
